Company universal of TANGO - director
Dancer, teacher and choreographer.
dancer, teacher and choreographer.
He was born in a humble family and spent his
childhood in LUJAN DE CUYO (Mendoza), the same village where
LEONARDO FAVIO, the great director and scriptwriter, was born. It was there
that Hernán, being only ten years old, dived into the world of Argentine
dances, but he never imagined that later on he would be able to go ahead in
time with his innovative shows and by means of his peculiar vision, which makes
him one of the best creators at the moment.
He started his career in Mendoza, with his teachers and choreographers Terrazas
and E. Pino, who instructed him artistically and then asked him to join the
“Ballet Luján”, with whom he made his first national tour to the North of the
country ( Jujuy, Salta,
Catamaca, Santiago del Estero, La Rioja), travelling around
all the cities and presenting the show at “El Festival del Poncho”, “Peña de Guemes”, etc. Then,
they travelled to Chile.
Along with these professional activities, he took part in a series of contests
as “zapateador” (heel-tapping dancer) and as solo dancing couple, which awarded
him first place prizes and awards.
In 1993 he was called to go on tour to Spain,
and he took part in the “Festival Mundial de Danzas Folklóricas” (a World
Festival of Folk Dance) in PALMA DE MALLORCA, he then continued to MADRID and MARBELLA.
In Uruguay, he presented his
shows at El Prado Festival, Roosevelt
Square, and channel 4 (TV) from Montevideo, in 1994.
When he was only 17 years old, he started to make choreographies and give
dancing lessons in a school aiming to prepare future dancers, so as to increase
his income. Everything under the control of his teacher, who was one of the
most important choreographers of the time.
Two years later he was chosen as the choreographer in charge of directing one
of the 18 regional parties of VENDIMIA, which intensified his interest in
making choreographies, shows and carrying out his ideas in the future.
In 1995 Julio Lopez, Teatro Colón’s choreographer chose him to dance in the
show KUARAVI, together with Eleonora Cassano and Julio Bocca.
In 1997 he made a three-month tour to the United States with Gladys Colombo.
Together, they performed as a solo tango dancing couple in New
York, New Jersey and Atlantic City.
Then the couple made their second international tour, this time to Chile, presenting their shows from La Serena to Santiago
( Reñaca, Viña del Mar, Nogales,
etc.), they crossed the Andes and performed in Cordoba, at “Cosquin Festival,” in 1999.
They went back to Buenos Aires and danced at the most popular “milonga houses”
in town: “Niño Bien”, “Salón Canning”, “Viejo Correo”, “Parakultural”, “La Catedral”, “Sunderland”,
“La Barranca”,
“La Nacional”,
“La Galería
del Tango”, “Torcuato Tasso”, “La Confitería Ideal”, among others.
That year, they signed an agreement with Atam, and together, they travelled
around greater Buenos Aires.
They shared the tango show with Ricardo Marín, Juan Carlos Godoy, Pablo Greco
(Beba PUGLIESE’s first bandoneón) and other renown artists from our country’s
popular music.
Besides, they performed at different theatres: Roma (together with the “Los
Reyes del Tango” [the Kings of Tango]), Teatro Colonial and others.
In the years 2000, 2001 and 2002 they danced at Cosquin Festival again and it
is on that year that they start preparing the setting up of their first show:
“ASI SE BAILA PIAZZOLLA” (Piazzolla is danced this way) (a tango show) and then
they created the show “ARGENTINA BAILA” (a folk dance show), first performed at
LA TRASTIENDA,
on April 19th, 2004.
Hernán also explores the art of MALAMBO [an argentine male dance which consists
mainly of heel tapping] to the extent of reaching extraordinary limits not only
in his northern and southern heel tapping but also in the art of handling
elements such as PONCHO (a sort of cape worn by gauchos), “BOLEADORAS”,
“BOLEADORA-FACON”, “BOLEADORA” WITH FIRE, “TACUARA” OR SPEAR, “TALERO”,
DRUM,ROPE OR WHIP (also used in Hernán’s role of RODOLFO VALENTINO), and
others.
Furthermore, he has been hired by the Buenos Aires
City Council to give lessons at different public parks: ROSEDAL
DE BUENOS
AIRES, PARQUE SARMIENTO, PARQUE CENTENARIO and PARQUE
PATRICIOS.
Throughout his extensive career, he has shared the stage with: LEON GIECO, LOS
KJARKAS, MARCELA MORELO, ELEONORA CASSANO, JULIO BOCCA, DANIELA CARDONE, PATO
GALVAN, VIOLETA RIVAS, NESTOR FABIÁN, MARÍA GRAÑA, ORQUESTA COLOR TANGO,
CONTRATIEMPO, LOS REYES DEL TANGO.
He took part in events where several renown people were present: PRESIDENT
NESTOR KIRCHNER, JULIO GRONDONA, CLAUDIO MORRESI, PAOLA SUARES, ROBERTO DE
VICENZO, MARIO VARGAS LLOSA, ARMANDO TEJADA GOMEZ, SWEDISH AMBASSADOR ARNE
RODIN, among others.

TANGOS DEL UNIVERSO
The new show of
Hernàn Villegas
A tango and national folk dance show.
15 ARTISTS ON STAGE WITH TYPICAL BUENOS
AIRES ORCHESTRA. Awesome.
Impressing.
Unbeatable.
These 15 exceptional artists, dancers, musicians and singers have accompanied
very important artists such as Julio Bocca, Cipe Lincovsky, Adriana Varela and
Antonio Gasalla, among others; and they have performed in the main tango places
and traditional theatres in Buenos Aires, New York, Japan. Chile and Spain. This time, the show is an
attractive suggestion aimed at those who enjoy argentine music and dance.
DESCRIPTION OF THE SHOW.
“ Tango universal” . Hernán and Cia have already created and made the
choreography for three shows ( Asi se Baila Piazzolla, Argentina Baila and Neto
Tango), 2 shows for “tango houses” in Buenos
Aires and more than 200 folk dance and tango
choreographies.
In this show, they present an exquisite musical and choreographic repertoire,
where an ancient tango style prevails, which shows tango in an early stage, by
means of a scene of “compadritos”, with typical costumes and a selection of
music of the time: “El Choclo”, “Felicia”, “La Cumparsita”, among
others. Then, magically, the singer intervenes with a repertoire playing tangos
such as “Por una cabeza”, “Romance de Barrio”, “Corazón al sur”, among others.
The folk dance scenes ( popular music and dance) were made with faultless
choreographies and typical costumes, among which are CHACARERA, ZAMBA ARGENTINA, BAILECITO
DEL NORTE
DE NUESTRO PAIS, among others.
It is expressed in such a way that it was possible to merge those ancient
rhythms, songs and dances of our country, with elements of high professional
level as regards setting up, staging, lighting and special effects, and an
enormous amount of knowledge on different styles in modern dance to express the
scenes in the show in a correct and original way. One of the most emotive
moments in he show is the MALAMBO WITH ELEMENTS (BOLEADORAS, KNIVES, PONCHOS
(capes worn by gauchos), AND OTHERS), played by dancers of the company who
(according to Hernán) were chosen following a criterion to select the best in
the country.
The final stage is a tour to different authors and players of our national
music, with more modern costumes and carefully designed choreographies, so as
to keep the real essence of danced tango, “Quejas de Bandoneón”, “Libertango”
“Deus tango”, “Verano Porteño”... The music band in charge of the show plays a
varied repertoire with songs from Anibal Troilo, Pugliese, Mariano Mores, Piazzolla,
among others
Duration: the whole tango and folk dance show, with dancers, singer and
musicians live lasts an hour 20 minutes, but in general, we adapt it upon
request.
